Judge Curtis V. Gómez has initiated and hosted several educational and health outreach programs.
Kids and the Court was launched in 2005 and offers students in our community a broad overview of the Court's functions. The program is designed to provide the students with an opportunity to interact with the Court staff in a positive setting.
The Court’s concerns about the well-being of federal employees led to another outreach program – onsite free FLU shots provided by the Virgin Islands Department of Health, Immunization Program.
In 2006, the national program, “Open Doors to Federal Courts” was initiated in the Division of St. Thomas. High school students are given an opportunity to role-play a fictitious case in the courtroom before a judge.
District Judge Curtis V. Gomez tasked the Office of Probation with creating a local film, with local talent, which resulted in the video, “In an Instant.” The video is shown during presentations to various Virgin Islands organizations and schools, with the goal of reducing gun violence. The video portrays a young man who obtains a firearm, is arrested at a traffic stop, and finally is sentenced to the mandatory minimum of 15 years.
In 2013, Power of Women (POW) came into existence with an objective to reach out and empower young women in our community with their life choices. POW presentations are made to Virgin Islands organizations and schools.
