The District Court of the Virgin Islands announces that its Inaugural Passing-of-the-Gavel Ceremony was held at the District Court of the Virgin Islands in St. Croix on Tuesday, August 20, 2013. Judicial officers and employees of the Court residing in St. Thomas participated by videoconference. During the ceremony, Chief Judge Wilma A. Lewis received the gavel, symbolically representing the office of the Chief Judge, from the former chief, Judge Curtis V. Gómez.
A new tradition was therefore established. The gavel will reside with the Chief Judge and will be passed to the incoming chief with the passage of the responsibilities of that office.
The ceremony was held internally with all District Court personnel and the members of the United States Marshal Service in attendance.
